Magic Find Bottle

The other week I had a brilliant idea.  It came to me rather abruptly in the middle of the night as I walked to the bathroom.  A sharp driving pain sent me into a fit of rage when I saw a little tiny Barbie shoe that had implanted itself into the arch of my foot.  It was becoming very annoying  stepping on all these discarded things.  It had gotten to the point where I would just hope the vacuum would solve the problem for me.

Whenever we buy a new toy like (Barbie) there always seems to be little shoes, little purses, little accessories that the kids just chuck around.  I find them everywhere.  I used to put them in my pocket and try to match stuff up later. I cant be bothered to do this anymore.  So I thought of an idea to do something useful with all these “spare parts”.

We created something fun that we call “The Magic Find Bottle”.

Here is what you need:

  • 1 clean and dry Juice bottle or Soda bottle
  • pot barley
  • food colouring
  • lost things
621

barley that has been coloured with food colouring

Start out by removing the label and  cleaning out a juice or soda bottle and make sure it is very dry before you use it.  It also must have a tight-fitting lid.  Fill the bottle with the barley up to about 2 inches from the top.  This will give you an idea of how much barley to use – you want to still be able to move around the barley inside the bottle so don’t fill it up too much.  Separate the barley into little dishes and add different colour food colouring to each dish.  I used about 10-15 drops or so.  Mix well.  put them in a spot where little hands or pets won’t reach them.  You don’t want a rainbow of a mess everywhere.  Stir up the bowls every morning so it is good and dry. I think I left out the bowls for 5 days.

Next you take all of your lost items and mark them down on a list.  Make sure that the items you choose can fit into the opening of the bottle first.  The kids can help you to add an item and add some of the coloured barley.  Once it is all in there you can tape the list to the outside of the bottle.

Both of the girls love to play with this bottle.  Sunshine loves to shake it up and Loveliness loves to look for all the things inside.  Another great thing about this is when the girls get bored with what is inside I can change it up and put different lost things inside.
